I'm just a lil paranoid and making sure my two months of researching tanks, heaters, water cleansers, enrichment, food, etc. paid off. This is Bubbly, pronounced Bublé like the singer. He's been here since last Saturday. From what I've researched he's showing signs of happiness and he's actually gotten brighter in these few days too! I also put extra sponging around the volcano bubbler as I was afraid he'd struggle swimming or get stressed but have since noticed others use the same bubbler for their Betta without extra sponging so any advice on that would also be appreciated, butwhat do you guys think? Happy feesh?

The environment mostly looks great, but that filter is going to cause you headaches and heartache. There’s no other way to say it, cartridge filters are bad filters.

The best thing you can do for long term fish health (and water clarity) is get a big sponge filter (the foam part must be at least the size of a soda can) and run it off that air pump (or get a second pump if you can’t live without the volcano). Do not go by the manufacturer’s tank size ratings, go by physical size only.

    Get something like this:

Then don’t clean it more than once a month, and when you do clean it, put it in a bucket of water and give it two squeezes. Only two. No matter what comes out. The brown stuff isn’t poop, it’s beneficial bacteria, and you’re going to have a bad time if you squeeze too much out. Only two squeezes.

Do that, and your water will be clearer and the fish will have a longer, healthier life.
