this is jelly, my long fin betta. i hope i used the right tag for this, but i need some advice. i have him in a 10 gallon tall but i have a feeling that this might be too big for him. he does explore the tank but usually is just chilling in by the top cuddled in the amazon sword. i’ve seen recommendations to put bettas in a smaller tank as he is a long fin and you might see improvement in his behavior and overall happiness and health but i don’t know if thats a good thing to do. i really enjoy his large tank and i want him to feel like he has a big enough home, but i’m just worried that its too big for him. what if it isn’t too big and i move him to a 5 gallon and he hates it? hes only a year old. anyone else go through this and have some advice for me?

Give him more resting spots. Long finned bettas tend to get tired easily because of the weight of their fins. I don’t recommend downsizing.
Before switching tanks, i’d rather increase his access to resting spots, Longfinned Betta don’t do well with depth or travel distances without the possibility to rest up (they’re wearing the equivalent of a victorian ball gown).
So Betta Hammocks, Leaves, generally floating resting spots or spots suction-cupped to a wall, Little piece of driftwood with some broad-leafed Anubias on it with suction cups hidden behind the wood can also be a nice addition, you’re free to use your imagination on this.
It’s an odd one. I ended up downsizing my betta tank from 10 to 6 gallon. He was dull, lethargic and timid in the big tank. I set up a heavily planted cube for him, with softer acidic water and he loves it. He’s started interacting with me. He has developed colours that I didn’t know he had. All of the information here says bigger tank is better. It isn’t always the case.
no such thing as too big of a tank
