Betta Fish: Got this guy out of a REALLY bad situation. Just noticed he’s got kind of a big chest. Is he just jacked or is something wrong?

Look at the belly area of both, look at the headshape and ventral fins and then look at your fish again, i’d say you’ve got a girl and a fine Betta – colors are a bit weak, fins look a little rough… recent acquisition?
That’s a little female! She is just a slight bit bloated, fast her for a day or two and then feed her a few pellets once to twice a day. Do a fast day once a week to help digestive regulation! I do Fridays for my fish, fast Fridays are easy to remember. Best of luck with her and glad you for her out of the bad situation she was in!

He could be bloated, but I wanna see what he looks like from up top. His gills look a bit reddish and inflamed.
Check for ammonia, nitrate and chloride levels. You could give him a salt bath to help heal but it’s possible he has some type of gill thing going on. Keep his water clean and see if it gets better.
When I tell you guys “bad situation” this is what I’m talking about. A friends dad has a hoarding situation. I didn’t know what she even looked like until I got her home. I just got her last night. It’ll take some time to heal for sure. And it’s been a WHILE since I’ve had fish (and since my last one was a silver arowana in a 300 gallon tank, this is quite the difference) we are relearning. Thank you for your help for me and my girl!
