I'm so sad. i genuinely don't understand what could have happened. I've had him for almost two months and he's been absolutely fine the whole time. he ate all his food and was responsive and always came up to the top to see me.
the other day he stopped being so responsive and started laying down near the front of the tank more, but he was still swimming around. i bought a new head for his air pump and a water change in case there were any issues. it went this way for a few days and today I woke up and he was dead.
I did water tests, everything cane out as it should (nirites and nitrates at 0, pH at about 6.5, ammonia at 0). there are no tank mates except for a couple ramshorn snails that showed up in my plants. it's a 40l planted tank. i gebuinely have no idea what happened and I'm so distraught, I loved him a lot. i don't know what Im doing wrong and I'm afraid to get a new fish incase I'm majorly messing up in some way.

Sometimes it just happens, crappy breeding for pet stores, bad genetics. The list goes on. Keep in mind most Berta are already a year old when the get to the store.
We don’t know what was happened to him internally, it’s not your fault
How long has the tank been set up? 0 nitrate isn’t good unless it’s a really heavily planted tank x
Can you show a shot of the whole tank, and describe the filtration setup in some detail?
