This is my first betta ever, her name is Opal and I absolutely adore her. I've had a fishtank since I was around 9 or 10, but then took a break and just started this tank up in December of last year. It's a 20 gallon and I originally set it up for kuhli loaches because I love them so much, they are my favorite fish. I got her in mid January a little impulsively, the local fish store had recently gotten a new shipment of fish and I saw her in one of the large sales tanks with multiple other female bettas. (The local fish store is really nice, and they take great care of all their animals)
She was sold to me as a koi betta and I'm not entirely sure where or who she came from, I don't know why I didn't ask. She is so wonderful, I love her so much. I've even been trying to train her to do little tricks lol
I recently saw someone say on here that blue bettas are more likely to develop tumors and that got me really worried, especially because I've never heard that before. I know they are mass produced and aren't always the healthiest, but I'd really like to know if there is anything else that she could possibly be predispositioned to that I missed when researching so I can watch and hopefully catch anything early enough. I want to make sure she has the best life possible, she is so amazing 😭💙

I have been reading up and it looks like:
Likely cataracts – all at all age
Eye scales – more likely dragons
Tumours – all Koi and in-bred genes
Most diseases seem to be from poor keeping though, so treating her (and her water quality ) well is keeping her much much much safer ))
