I bought Old Man as an impulse by a few weeks ago because I felt bad he was stuck inside the small pet store cups. He is a King Betta(?) so he’s fairly larger than a standard betta. I got his tank set up at home and I noticed he became a lot more interactive. I used to stand and put my finger up to the side of the glass on one side of the tank and he’d swim over and flare his gills out like he was going to attack. I thought this was funny- until now I realize that anytime I even approach the tank he spots me and swims over to flair at me. Just walking around in the room he follows me around (but he only flares if I approach the tank). With my parents he seems to be fine, but I guess I just irritate him? Even though I’m the one who feeds him…
I’m beginning to worry how much this stressed him out, and how can I be on good terms with him? He flares his gills out almost every single time he sees me.
Do you happen to wear dark colors often? Idk probably he could also be seeing his reflection against the glass or i saw someone say some bettas dont like the color black? Lol
But i wouldn’t worry as long as it’s in short bursts and not for hours. Maybe give him more bloodworms as peace offering 🤭
My betta only ever flares at me when it seems I startle him or the room is too dark and only his tank light is on.
Food and routine.
My betta HATES any finger on the glass and will flee from it like it is some eldritch abomination coming for his soul.
I once had a blue crown tailed Betta who would try to bite my finger while I was feeding him. He would jump up. Total jerk. Loved him though.
My last white Betta would flair at my fingers but otherwise just swim over and want attention. I always assumed he thought my finger was another fish and he was being territorial. He was my favourite.

My girl loves me now. She flared at me a lot when i got her now she knows I’m the food provider.
Hand feeding worked fast on her, she does jump though that was weird at first.
