It was in a small bowl but I’m in the process of moving to a 1gal. I don’t have the budget to upgrade it to a 5gal with a filter and heater, what can I do to give it a slightly better life? Also how much should I feed it? Roommate told me once every two days but google says twice a day. Betta is slightly longer than an inch long for reference (sorry for the bad photo)

1 gal size (prob less tbh)
no filter or heater
told to change water once a week?
just fed like three flakes
no decor

100% agree w the commenter saying to offer it to someone else. Say it died and give it away to someone that won’t neglect it. 🙁

  2. It will die in cold water that’s a freshwater fish that lives in warm climates. It will die if no heat and no filtration or at least an air bubbler for now. That’s wrong of them to put that on you like that. If you can find a close enough rescue person give it to them. You have any other friends with a community tank. Put it in there. Tell him to catch it if he wants it back or her. Just saying. That’s sad. Poor guppy or whatever it is.

You could do twice a day, about 5 or so pellets at a time or a very, very small pinch. Once a day should be fine too, or every other day (that was my preferred schedule for my bettas, though I fed a lot more at a time because they were in community tanks.)

My biggest concern is too much leftover food, which could be awful in a small tank.

Also, maybe people would disagree with me, but if you get a 5 gallon you could skip out on the filter if you do dedicated, regular water changes. Then all you would need is the five gallon tank and the heater. If there’s no decor already there, you could by a single fake plant or something for her to hide in, and that could absolutely tide her over if you wanted to buy a few things at a time in the future, if you even wanted to (I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t, considering she’s your roommate’s fish)

  5. This is nothing against you but ur friend honestly isn’t a good human if he can’t do the basic things for a pet this is pathetic
