im in the process of cycling this tank for a new betta fish. this is my setup:
-5 gallon tank
-tank heater
-sponge filter, but also using my old hang on the back filter until the tank is done cycling because the sponge filter is brand new
-mostly real plants (only fake plant is the flower things but thats kind of obvious)
-gravel substrate and some smooth rocks just because why not
-the tent didn’t feel like it had sharp edges to me when i bought it in case someone asks, i have a habit of feeling things because i also have a gecko and i dont want anyone getting hurt
-the wood is real and releases tannins into the tank as well hence the tea color of the water
-there is a feeding ring so that when i feed the fish, the food isn’t floating around the tank
-he also has a tunnel at the top so he can sit near the surface if he feels like it
should i maybe add floating plants? and maybe more plants into the substrate? (of course after the cycle so i dont ruin it)

Looks awesome I have a few more plants in my 5gallon really helps and the fish love it, I also use frogbit for floaters as bettas and other fish love going through them. Not great for goldfish they they just eat them lol, looks so good tho!
Looks great! I was going to come on here and say the rocks youre using could raise the pH, but after some research, now I’m praising you for using quartz since it doesn’t do that, like some rocks! You’re doing a great job.
If you want to add floaters, they look amazing and are beneficial to both the tank’s levels and the fish. it discourages jumping and it sucks up some of the nitrate, so I’d recommend it.
You need an aquatic soil substrate. Anything that is either made for tanks or is labeled organic will work just fine.
Looks good, could always add more plants, they do love floating plants. Also, I can’t really tell how big the holes in the tunnel are, but I’ve seen a lot of cases of bettas getting stuck and injured in similar tunnels
Super cute! I love your feeding ring! I’ve been looking for one that isn’t just a circle!
I would totally add floating plants for a betta! They love the shade- but I’d be a little careful what floating plant. I’m not sure if this is a common issue or just me, but I had red root floaters for my betta and he loved resting on top of them which eventually killed a lot of my floaters because they couldn’t be submerged lol. So I’d get something hardy- but I think that’s a great idea! If you wanted your tank to look fuller, I believe frogbit grows pretty long roots if you like that look! 🙂
