Hi all. I'm getting back into the hobby after a few years' break, and I have a Fluval Shaker 345 that I'll be setting up in a couple of weeks. I've done live bearers like guppies and platies in the past, had a bigger tank with rasboras and rams, many small tanks with bettas, shrimp, and most recently I actually had this very same tank a few years back full of Malawi cichlids.
I live in Scotland now, where the water is a lot softer, so probably better suited to more fish. I'd love a fish that looks fantastic schooling around in groups, and I'm tempted to maybe go for a big group of rasboras again, or maybe some tetras, along with a large group of shrimp. But I'd also love to get some colourful fish, either bigger "statement" fish, or smaller ones I can have in groups, especially if they inhabit a different level of the tank to the rasboras if I go with them. I'm open to any schooling species, I'd just love to see a beautiful, synchronised show around such a good size space. It will be planted as well, ideally. Could someone suggest some peaceful community fish that might fit the bill, please?
All I have so far is the catfish making herself at home on top of the tank, as you can see. đ
Thank you!

Golden white cloud mountain minnows are a colourful option and you can keep some shrimp with them. You could easily keep a school of corydoras with them too
Jewel cichlids are very beautiful fish and fairly cheap for the price you pay Iâd also recommend geos and acara so many cool options
Iâd always think of Rummy Nose Tetras if your looking for smaller fish, the school together like nothing Iâve ever seen, with that size of tank you could easily have 20+ and lose hours of your day watching them. I also love Harlequin Rasporas with them. Iâm also in Scotland and can confirm both species love our water quality đŹ
Oh my goodness the bushiness of that tail!
