My poor shrimp! I just good this pretty boy, he was in a tank with other fish in the store and I watched him for a while to see how he was with other fish and he seemed pretty chill. Got home and putted him in his new tank that has 4 cherry shrimp, and he became a terrorist!
I mean, at least from what I can see he doesn’t chase them around, but if he sees them he does try to bite them 🥲
Any tips? I don’t have another tank to put my shrimp in, the best I can do is tomorrow go to the store and buy a 10L round tank, but then I don’t have any filter to put in it
pleaase help

  1. I once bought some cherry shrimps and added a betta sorority (6) and they all practically ignored the shrimps.

I was told however during the purchase that buying them, there is a 50-50 chance that the Bettas will eat them. They never ate them, I had 20 Shrimps, 18 survived when I gave it away and the remaining 2 I found inside the pump as I was cleaning it.

Maybe females bettas are less aggressive to shrimp? Or they didnt care enough to perform a massacre, either way, 50-50.

I wish you the best for your solution.

  2. monitor closely, my betta did same (tried to bite but didn’t sprint/chase for it) for couple days but he’s now the calmest guy ever and doesn’t even bite living black worm. shrimps are very fast so if he doesn’t take sprints to try to really eat them, I think you could just closely keep eye on them for now and see how he behaves after a moment getting used to the enviroment.

  3. It’s hit and miss with bettas and shrimp, some will ignore and leave shrimp alone, others will hunt them. Seems to largely depend on your betta’s temperament/personality and may also be how much food they’re eating. Your betta could be bored or still exploring their new home.

Give your shrimp many, many more places to hide (another user mentioned shrimp caves). I don’t know if you want to add them, but some floating plants will help (you can get floating plant separators that have suction cups to segregate your floating plants to one area) by giving your shrimp more places to hide and more places for your betta to rest/provide enrichment.

It looks like you’ve got a nice tank set up with some plants already, but some more wouldn’t hurt.
I’m lucky to have a betta with a mild temperament who doesn’t bother my shrimp, but I also have a huge 29g community tank with lots of room and places for my shrimp to hide.

The betta honestly just seems a little curious and didn’t attack them, but definitely keep an eye on the shrimps. Some Bettas are entirely fine with living with shrimps and others eat them, so it depends entirely on the temper of your fish.
