Hi all. I lost my turtle unexpectedly at the beginning of last month and just had to say goodbye to my dog this week. I’m so heartbroken, but I usually find myself itching to love another pet fairly soon after saying goodbye to one. I kept a few bettas in college, admittedly not in good conditions. Still, they seemed to live pretty good lives and the females have a special place in my heart.
I turned my turtle’s tank into a planted tank as a way of honoring her. It’s 40 gallons, cycled, heated, and heavily planted. The filter is a Fluval FX2. Substrate is peat moss capped with blasting sand. The only critters in there are bladder and I think ramshorn snails that hitchhiked on the plants.
Two questions:
-Is this too big for a single female betta? I think the plants are tall/big enough now to support her, but I’d get some extra ledges for her to rest on near the top.
-I do have dragon stone in there that I’d prefer not to take out, but I know that can tear fins. Given the space and me wanting a female, would this be okay?
If this tank isn’t suitable, I do have a 20gal stand that I can get a tank for and build a betta-specific one at some point. I would just love to work with what I already have and get a betta sooner if possible. Thanks in advance for any help 🙂

i’m sorry for your loss <3 your tank is beautiful
I think a female betta and a school of maybe neon or ember tetras would be perfect for this tank
I think your tank will make any fish happy. Good job! Also, sorry for your loss!
This tank is a dream. I would add a betta hammock for her to rest near the surface. Or a betta log. They seem to like those. Also most females tend to have shorter fins (less chance to tear) anyway so you could put one in there and just monitor. I would also consider establishing some ghost shrimp and snails for enrichment. Otherwise this is great.
This tank is an absolute Betta kingdom. Get some other peaceful community fish and let her rule over it. Sorry for your losses. 🖤
This tank is awesome for a betta! You will make a sweet girl veryyy happy! Just make sure you add some resting spots near the top. You could also add some corys! I absolutely love watching mine. They’re so cute and silly. I call them my cats.
Im soo sorry about your turtle and your pup 😭
