I’m a first time fish owner. 20 gal with live plants, snails, and shrimp. Heater and filter.
I feed him bug bites and those frozen worms from the pet store.
Using liquid test kit
Ph- 6.8
Ammonia- 0
Nitrite- .25 (was 1, but I have been adding prime, doing extra water changes, and I added aquarium salt when it was 1, has been going down nicely)
Nitrate-20
I got this fish, trout, about 3 weeks ago from a pet store.
He’s extremely active, but I’m worried he may be a lot stupid, blind maybe?? Had issues with feeding, kept missing the food, I got a feeding ring and it basically hand feeding this dude beacuse he misses the food so much. Sometimes he runs into things, but his eyes look fine. Maybe stupid? Idk.
I know he can see some cuz he’s chased shrimp before, but he runs into things chasing them and looses them instantly.
He became more vibrant, but there’s his fins are turning clear, I looked it up online but didn’t see any posts that had as significantly clear as my boy.

New fin growth, this is actually a sign he’s doing well 🙂
But no, your fish is not stupid. The transparent parts are her sails which are growing. Afterwards they will take on their final color.
“Is my fish dumb?” Hahaha
Your little dude looks awesome.
They’re definitely weird though. Never in my life did I think I’d own a fish with such a personality.
New fins growing ! Orrrr just shifting colors. This is normal. If you see more dulling and lethargy then worry. But the first few weeks of owning a new betta they usually change color. I’ve had ones I got that were light pink turn red and black …. It’s so cool to watch them shift and normal. If it was bad he wouldn’t look this healthy and clean, fins would be ragged -esque.
For the blindness – they can see but it’s not the same as humans . It’s hard for them to see directly infront of them as there eyes are kinda on opposite sides of their noggin. Try to show the tongs to the side of his face about 2 inches or so away as that’s easier to see. You can put a worm infront of a betta and they act blind, their depth perception is just diff than ours is all, your man looks healthy. No diamond eye or pop eye, just beady betta eyes.
I did zoom
On the other hand, 20 in nitrate is a little too much. You risk ending up with algae. And bettas’ sails are very fragile: the slightest pollution, and their fins have problems!
It could be due to the food if it is not all eaten.
It would be better to use water changes rather than aquarium salt, because the plants don’t like that much!
