So I recently got a small school of black neon tetras, but I’m concerned that one of them may be a different kind of tetra. Can anyone ID for me? First 4 pics are the potential imposter, last 4 are my other black neons for comparison.
If it’s not a black neon tetra, I could use some advice… I get attached to my animals really quickly. If it’s not absolutely necessary, I really don’t want to return or rehome the poor thing. But if it’s going to need a whole new school of different tetras to be happy, I just don’t know if I can provide that with my current living and financial situation. It’s currently in a 20 gallon long with 5 other black neon tetras, 7 zebra danios, and 3 kuhli loaches (hopefully 6 kuhli loaches soon… as soon as the pet store gets them back in stock.)
I’ve also got a 10 gallon with two African dwarf frogs and a 6 gallon with a betta fish, which we’re hoping to upgrade to a 10 gallon soon. Other than that, I don’t think I can financially afford a larger tank right now, nor do I think it would fit in my apartment— especially cause we’ve only got a handful of outlets in the place to plug stuff in.
TL;DR: Is this a black neon tetra? And if not, what do I do?

I am not a tetra expert, but that looks like an Emperor Tetra / Kerri Tetra to me.
That’s a palmeri emperor tetra. It really should be in a group of 5+ of it’s own kind and I think that will overstock your 20 gallon, which is their minimum tank size. You should probably return it, unless it seems to be interacting with the black neons alright.
