My cousin decided to buy a fish for my mom’s coworker because she had one and was joking with him about him needing to get it a friend. He took it seriously and got a betta fish. The fish my coworker has is not a betta fish. The betta fish tried to eat the other fish so he was put in time out in a jar and is sitting in my mother’s office. I offered to take home in. Could someone give me some tips for how to care for him? I know I need to go buy a tank but I’ve never had a fish before so I don’t want to miss anything and him get depressed. I’ve named home Heartly

  1. Pure_Combination725 on

get him a 5-10 gal with natural substrate not dyed stuff. Get real plants or silk plastic plants as hard plastic will hurt their fins. Depending on how angry your betta might be no tank mates. If you get tank mates limit them if you get a small tank like maybe a snail or something. But you don’t have to they do pretty good on their own and actually prefer it

make sure your tank has a filter and a heater

Make sure you get a water conditioner and do a 20% water change once a week

  2. I just got a mystery snail for my betta Midnight to help with tank clean up but I actually think Midnight likes having a friend. He’s always hanging out around my snail Sunshine and just watching him or working on his bubble nest while Sunshine is in the area moving around. It’s really cute actually.

Live plants are the way to go. The more the better…Bettas love having places to explore and hide.

  3. Read about the nitrogen cycle and about “fishless cycle” add as much water to the largest container you can find in the meantime while you are cycling the tank. The more water volume, the more stable the parameters are. Get a Turkey baster and suck out the little poops often. They break down into ammonia, as does uneaten food. That’s what’s toxic to fish
