I guess this is both a transformation post and a question post but… this is Shadow. The first photo (black/blue) was from March after a month or so of having him.
Shadow went to live with my ex when he moved out in May, and recently I received a status update picture of him, the second photo (pink/red).
I can tell he is overweight, but is his drastic color change normal or is it indicative of him being unwell/unhappy? I mean, I know I was when I was living with my ex…

There is no way anyone can convince me that those two are the same fish. Rarely, and I mean RARELY do dark bettas marble into a lighter color, especially from black/blue to overwhelmingly white/red. That cannot be the same fish, I refuse to believe it.
This is not the same fish. For one going from dark to a lighter color has never happened in my 30 year experience with betta fish and traveling to betta competitions. Not once have I ever heard of a betta marbling to a lighter color. And two the mouth shapes are different on each fish and the eyes don’t change color from all black to a perfect yellow or gold rim either. Think it’s a prank to see if people would fall for it but ts definitely not the same fish
Update: I called this back into question moments ago and the ex just located/sent a photo of Shadow mid-transformation

Well I’ll be. Better keep that for the record books. I’ve never heard of darker marbling going lighter even at betta fish shows or hobbies alike. Have them timestamp the photos too.
Those are not the same fish. Hell No.
Black and blue to white/pink and red? Nah man your fish died and they secretly replaced it or something their is No. fucking. Way
What the fresh fuck
This can’t be the same fish. I’m sorry.
