Hi Reddit Ice Fishing! The library where I work is doing a "giving tree" gift drive for families in need in our community. I keep seeing folks put the tags for the teenage boys back, especially this one (it's been up for about a month and keeps getting returned to the tree).
I'd really love to make this kid's holiday season, but searching Bass Pro and Cabela's gives me a variety of totally different things when I search "ice fishing trap." I'd like to make sure he has everything he needs! Can you help me suss out what kind of gear this might actually mean? Can he use the trap(?) on its own, or will he need other equipment/accessories/gear to make use of it? I'd hate to get him something he can't use because he doesn't have the other basics. In case it's relevant, we're located in New England.
Thanks for your help, everyone, and happy holiday season!

We call them tipups in the Midwest
I think he is looking for Tip ups, other than some treble hooks and some line that should do it? Maybe someone from NE can confirm, I’ve never heard them be called traps before.
Tip ups!!!!

I second the tipup comment. Also in New England but have never heard anyone call it a trap
I think it means like an ice fishing tip up/rod holder…. [like this](https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/clam-outdoors-predator-tip-up-23clouprdtrtppxxxfic/23clouprdtrtppxxxfic?sku=25139855&srsltid=AfmBOorEkto57xXcETG6cVRglw0D3rr33LoTSZvRjKE2UwSdDPnukU3P3Ro)
Edit: I absolutely could be wrong so I’d maybe include a gift receipt. Or depending on where you’re located you could just buy a gift card to an outdoors store such as fleet farm, scheels or cabelas.
Are you in Maine by any chance? I think that’s where they call tip ups “traps.” Depending on how much you want to spend, you could add a gift card to a bait shop where they could get bait or if they need leaders or sinkers for fishing.
And kudos to you for contributing to this kids holiday. It’s a wonderful thing you’re doing.
