About 8 hours ago those scales weren’t missing, he’s behaving completely normal and the only clue that I have is having seen him crawling out of a narrow space between the ground and the tank’s main driftwood. That was a couple of days ago, but he could have done that again, I guess.
It’s either trauma related or an infection, right? If it were an infection would there be any other symptoms?
It’s our first Betta, we’ve had it for 6 months and it’s the first time we’ve seen this 🙁

So skinny . I hope you will find a way to get them better
Ammonia ok? Not listed
Great setup!
Just keep an eye on him, if it’s self harm it should heal with clean warm water.
Does he eat all 10 pellets? If not remove the uneaten food to keep it from fouling the water while he heals.
Throwing meds at them is not always the best strategy, going natural is usually the best.
I always keep meds on hand if it’s something serious, but monitor him, and it should work out.
To me it looks like it could be ammonia burn. I would purchase the API fresh water test kit as it’s more accurate then strips and figure out if it’s your ammonia
Can’t comment on the rest but I like your tank and your fish looks very skinny. What kind of pellets are you feeding him? 10 a day seems a crazy amount, especially for how small he is.
