I’ve been told this thing is a fish gaff, I am not a fisherman myself but I am curious how one would even use this for fishing?

Get a fish close to the boat.

“Gaff” it (stab with point at a convenient point and angle).

Use gaff to pull fish onto boat.

Used when a net just won’t do.
