I had interest in aquascaping for several years but didn't have chance to start one because I had to travel very frequently.
Recently we settled in Shenzhen, China with my fiance, we both are international PhD students here. Anyways, couple of days ago I instantaneously decide to have one.
Done all the shopping on拼多多APP (domestic version of TEMU). The prices were really cheap, all cost less then 40 usd and delivered very quickly.
Tank: 13.5 liter, 30x19x24 (8 usd)
The floor:
Five part substrate activator includes humic acid powder, carbon source minerals, beneficial bacteria, and trace elements to create a long-lasting, fertile plant substrate.
Ceramsite balls to house beneficial bacteria
Amazon soil from a domestic brand 1.2 kg used only at the back side
River style fine sand for the front side
Hardscape:
I just ordered 6 pieces of rock and 5 pieces of drift wood. All of them were small pieces, so l didn't decide the layout before the pieces arrive.
Thinking on how to combine these small pieces together was my fav part. I used a aquarium safe glue to connect them. I am really satisfied with the result:)
Plants:
Just ordered simplest plants since it is a low tech one.
Red Rose, Amazon Sword, Myriophyllum, Java Fern, Mini Bucephalandra and a surface plant that I don't know it's name
Light: 8.5 watt rgb light for 3 usd, has multiple spectrum options and a built-in timer.
3 days after the setup l added 5 AP suggestions. I will add a few shrimp too, haven't decide on adding a fish yet. Do you have any suggestions for this size?
l am very excited and looking forward to receive your oppinions and suggestions

13.5 litres is too small for any fish, and it’s too new and sparsely planted for any living things. A tank needs to be cycled properly before adding fish. You need a larger tank (30 litres minimum), more plants and time.
Do you know your water parameters? What is your TDS, GH, KH and PH? All these can have an impact on plant growth and livestock health.
If you are using aquasoil, it will likely leech ammonia into the water column which may cause your bucephlandra to melt. If you wish you keep going with this tank, you are better off keeping this a plant only for the next few months. Do large water changes (>50%) weekly until you get the hang of managing algae etc.
Also get a small filter, having flow and agitating the surface allows for oxygen exchange and has a big impact on the health of your tank.
