I have a ten gallon planted tank. It has snails, neons, and a netta. The fish are doing great. The plants are doing great. But mulm always builds up. How to fix! There pretty much no algae, because of the high density of plants.

It’s planted, dirted, and sponge filtered. Low budget, low tech, minimal maintenance tank

It’s around a year old

  1. Well, it’s a natural occurrence. Plants lose leaves and the snails break it down, just like in nature. You cannot stop this from happening with plants.

Only thing you could do is gravel vac it out. I personally love the mulm as it makes its way into the substrate, it feeds the plants.

  2. Trumpet snails will mix it into the substrate so it’s less visible and the plants can get to it quicker.
