Hello! I’m getting ready to upgrade my goldfish tank from a 75 to a 150, and I’m looking for advice on how to do it without crashing my cycle. The current tank is bare-bottom but has wood, rocks, and plants.

My plan so far:
• Move the goldfish into buckets/bins/coolers temporarily
• Transfer all decor, media, and as much tank water as possible
• Add red Fluorite as the new substrate
• Set up the 150 and top it off like a big water change
• Add my second canister filter, while keeping the existing canister and sponges running on the new tank

The only new additions would be the substrate and the second filter—everything else would be from the established tank.

Will this keep things stable enough? One of my goldfish is 28 years old, and I’d be devastated if anything happened to her. Any tips or experiences are really appreciated! 🐟❤️

  1. I upgraded with no problems but I moved substrate, however the filter should carry enough bacteria since it is aligned to your stocking. Just move everything and keep a very close eye on perameters, being prepared to water change if you need to.

  2. should work just fine if the old filters are not shut off for too long or there are no sudden param changes, but i would always test during the first week or so. you could also run the new filter in the current tank for a week or two alongside the others if it does not add too much flow, to have that media already pre seeded. personally i do always add some bottled bacteria when moving tanks because why not, idk if it ever contributed anything but make me feel less anxious XD

either way if the cycle does have a little hiccup it should regenerate quickly.

that is a gloriously old fish, amazing! i love it
