Hey Discus Community!
I introduced three discus fish to my tank a while ago, and they look truly amazing! The water parameters are perfect, as always (♥️🙏).
The only issue (and joy!) is that it seems two of them have found a corner and have totally paired up! 😅 The Orange one and the Red one are now very close, engaging in the classic "shivering" or "dancing" behavior, and they are actively chasing away the third fish, the Blue discus.
New and confusing observation: I can clearly see a distinct point/papilla underneath both the Red and the Orange discus. This point looks rounded and thick, which usually indicates they are FEMALES!
This "shivering" behavior between two apparent females is puzzling!
Could I have two females trying to pair up?
Or is one of them a Male whose papilla is just not as pointed yet?
I am now totally unsure of their genders. I want to get the Blue discus a friend that matches its gender to prevent stress, but I need to solve this mystery first!
Expert help needed! Can anyone tell from the pictures/videos if the Orange, Red, and Blue discus are Male or Female? Please specifically look at the papilla shape (breeding tube), fin shape, or mouth shape to help me differentiate.
If the videos/photos aren't clear enough, please let me know what specific angles or details you need, and I will gladly upload more footage!
Regarding the Tetras:
I also have some Tetras in the tank. Will they interfere with the discus, especially now that the pair is trying to breed, or will they actually help by providing a sense of security (dither fish)?
Thanks a million for any insight! Happy fish keeping!
