I decided to completely rescape and go from blackwater to clear, and i want to get more color/motion now that i can actually see it. 55 gal tank, currently sporting a HOB rated for 20 gal (very low bioload currently, water tests were always good). Would canister filter be better for noise control and adequate filtration at higher bioload? I've never used one before. What brands are good, or what options are better?

Used is fine, DIY is fine. I still need to upgrade to a better light so those damn plants can grow in, so I'd like to keep the filter under $100 usd if possible. Thanks in advance

Do you have room for a 20g sump tank in your stand? That would be ideal, in my opinion

A bigger Hob with a turn over rate of 6 and your own media. If you want cheap you can use a sponge filter but it will be ugly in the tank.

  3. A good internal filter would do or a canister. Internal filters are almost silent and you can customise the filter media. Not sure where your based so I cant recommend any brands

I was a long time Seachem Tidal filter user on my three tanks and highly recommend. Can go with the Tidal 55 or 75, there is plenty of room for filter media and it has a great Sicce pump. The only HOB I would ever use, and best part they don’t break the bank, both priced under $100.

Now that I am down to one 60 gallon, I run the Sicce Whale external canister filter. I have the 500 and was able to score it from Petco on sale last year.
