We are trying to match a mix between cozy and realistic and have therefore chosen real breeds. However, I will be honest, it's not all that easy getting into it. These are the breeds we have so far and I would love to know:

  • What are some really popular and beginner friendly fish?
  • What are breeds that are really rare to find or just difficult to keep?

We want to have a semi-realistic price economy and give players the opportunity to also collect rare and "difficult" fish, therefore we would like to include exotic breeds too.

And if you would like to give us more feedback in general, we would also be really happy to talk to some people with experience in fishkeeping who also game every now and then 🙂

EDIT: You can find the game here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4190760/The_Fish_Corner/ to get a better picture or wishlist it.

  1. Put a coccina complex betta in there. They die if you let your tank pH get above 6 and go on regular food strikes. You also never see them so you just have to hope they are alive.

  2. Seconding shrimp, at least neocaridinia shrimp and amano shrimp(though if you include breeding their irl breeding is pretty complex and basically a new game by itself since you need to change between salty and fresh water). There’s a lot of different varieties of shrimp. For salt water too. Maybe snails too? I know people breed some pretty interesting colors of shrimp and snails.
But also I find it hilarious the celestial pearl danio looks bigger than the goldfish- you might want to work on the sense of scale on the UI.

As for interesting fish some form of corydora and loach would be fun additions I think. Discus too!

Could be something with guppies or snails where they start off easy but eventually overwhelm the player with numbers.

  4. i don’t have personal experience but just from lurking maybe a saltwater aquarium and corals could be a higher difficulty “map” / fish ? 😀 I’ve felt Diana Walstad’s ecology of the planed aquarium describes the biological mechanisms in aquariums very well I think it’s a good book to consult if you’re planning to introduce tank parameters

  5. This already exists. Its called fish game. Its created by the YouTube channel “smarter everyday”. Really good channel and I think they did a great job with the game. Its available on steam I believe

  6. Lots of variations of central and South American cichlids! Other aquarium games never have a good selection, just Oscar’s usually

  7. Gotta have cories and Angelfish. Bristlenose plecos are also super popular. Then tetras. I see you already have neons, but you can add something like Congo tetras, or serpae tetras. Harlequin rasboras are also pretty popular fish. Goldfish also!

That’s just a few popular community fish. What’s your game about?

  8. Make the goldfish HUGE (as well as common pleco if you do one) and with a substantial penalty for waste.

    Pleco

    Pearl gourami

    cory cat of some type

    kuhli loach

    angel fish

    electric blue acara

    a rainbowfish

  9. Loaches & Corydoras

Edit: And definitely Angelfish, because they have such an iconic shape

White cloud minnow, rainbow shiner, medaka rice fish (relatively easy to keep, cold water fish)

Freshwater pipefish can be hard to find and rely on live food

  11. Peacock gudgeons are pretty neat.
    Pea puffers of course
    Galaxy otos (P. haroldoi).

    For difficulty and rarity.
    Hisonotus Iota
    Freshwater pipefish
    Scarlet and blue badis
    Inpaichthys luizae
    Pseudogastromyzon Fasciatus

  12. The ottocinculus catfish. Sneaky when there’s just a few but schooling when there is many!

  13. Add me to the Corydora chorus!

Loaches are also fun little guys, we have zebras in our tank. 🙂

There’s quite a bit of duplication of species colour-variants there. Just an observation, by no means a criticism.

To add some different body plans, I would be looking at some other popular fish in the hobby, e.g.: Corydoras, Khuli Loaches, Gouramis, for example.

  15. Bichir, knife fish, Denison barbs, corydora. Oscars, severum, geophagus, discus, angel fish, blue acara, and rams are popular cichlid varieties as well.

  16. Otocinclus, for sure! If you can, I would recommend going to a local pet or fish store and scoping out what they keep in stock and looks cool to you. Some shops list their inventory online if you don’t want to go in person. You could also look through things like aquarium co-op’s guides to fish for different tank sizes to get a idea as to what some commonly kept fish are. (Sorry if you’ve already done these, just trying to be helpful!)
