I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts, going to be my first year ice fishing so my safety relies on these reddit comments.

Reports around me are 1.5-3.5 before last nights deep freeze. I’ll be poking around tomorrow looking for 4+ to fish on.

4″ is fine I wait for 5 and keep checking it when you moving!

This picture tells us very little about the ice quality. If it’s all frozen aerated slush, it’s sketchy. If it’s got 2 inches of clear ice at the bottom, it’s a go as long as you’ve got a float suit and don’t mind the risk of going for a swim.

Ice varies a fair amount in thickness. The day I went through the ice it was 10″. That said….. I would go out on 4″ of ice.

I would walk on that, staying with 200 meters of shore, on the way to my spot.

I’d be out there.

For solid clear new ice 4 is fine.
