Hi everyone,

First let me say thank you all for the great community, it has been great to learn with you!

I'm looking for advice and suggestions on what do do next!

A bit about the current setup:

  • 20G aquarium with filter cycled for two weeks before habitants
  • White sand at the bottom: well, I didn't read much about bottoms and substracts for plants so I just went straight sand. Probably a bad choice because of the next point
  • added 3 natural plants ( anubia, microsotum mini and a limnophilia ) because I read a bit before going to the store and the guy convinced me and( probably very well )that I should have natural plants. I have also an artificial one in the back. Do the plants look healthy to you?
  • added guppies ( 1 male and 2 females) on the same day than plants
  • added also a thermostat (forgot about temperature on the cycle, didn't even thought on this before 🙁 )

I think the guppies are happy at least they are active swimmers 🙂 sometimes I struggle to understand if they are well fed and overall happy.
The guy in the store said I might have a surprise as one of the females looks like already pregnant and I am not so sure what to expect from that…

What do you guys suggest as next steps? Add more habitants? Plants? I'd like to have a more active life in the aquarium but not sure what to do next…

Appreciate your views! Thank you

  1. Definitely not an expert but I think the next step should be to get some root tabs for your plants. There are no nutrients in sand so your plants have nothing to eat. Your fish will fertilize over time but they need to eat now.

I like the island set up in the middle. More plants are always nice imo. I’d see about getting getting a couple of detritus snails to help with clean up

  2. Not bad at all but your fish could really use some more dense plants to hide when they are stressed
