Hello, I got this samurai betta about 2 days ago. I’m still fairly new to the betta keeping world, I have one other boy who is doing great in a 10 gallon. This samurai betta is in a 6.5 heated and filtered tank, he has a mystery snail tank mate and 7 ghost shrimp. The first day he liked following his shrimp mates around and was curious of his snail friend, last night and all morning he has been glass surfing the front of his tank. His ammonia is 0ppm, his nitrites are 0ppm, and his nitrates are 0ppm. it’s was cycled for a month before adding him in and my reading have been consistent. He is still eating, I am tap training him in the back left of his tank as he is developing diamond eye already. He was flaring last night but I turned down the light and the flaring has stopped, I’m just not sure what is causing this and I feel bad. Is this normal?

what temp is your water at? he might just be acclimating too. My guppy’s glass surfed for 3 days before being normal after adding them to the tank but they don’t do it anymore
Give him some time to acclimate to his new life. Surfing is normal as they get used to their environments. That said, if after a couple of weeks he’s still surfing, it may just be that he’s coasting along the ‘mirror effect’ and chasing its reflection. My samurai had the same issue. His tank is setup next to a black bookshelf that when the lights are on, that side of the tank wall against the shelf unit otherwise acted as a mirror and he would surf and flare all day causing stress. Admittedly it took me nearly a week to figure this out LOL. I rectified by placing a king sized, beige pillow case along that wall and it was immediate turnaround within minutes. The color of the pillow case was key because with the lights on it doesn’t act as a mirror for him to see himself as darker colors do. Keep an eye out and see how he fares in a couple weeks. You’ll find the right solutions when you need to. He’s a beautiful boy!
