Please help me. I don’t know anything about betta fish at all but I know this tank cannot be good for him.
I work as a cleaning lady at a doctors office and have to see this little guy every week and I feel so sad that he is in such a tiny tank with no toys. I don’t know what to do because of my awkward position as this isn’t a “coworker” and my position is obviously way, way below hers so I don’t want to offend anyone and lose my job.
I feel like Christmas finally gives me an opportunity to get this fish something to improve his life without it coming off poorly. Is there anything I can get him? I don’t have a lot of extra funds so I can’t get a whole tank set up but is there treats or enrichment or something I can get to improve his life?

It’s a tricky situation from a social standpoint, no one likes being told that they are not caring for their pet properly. Good luck, and thank you so much for carrying enough about a little life to try and do something!! Good luck!
If you have a pothos plant , you can clip a piece and propogate it in the fish’s water, it will absorb a lot of nitrates and help it feel less exposed.
Maybe you could offer to take it home for the holidays if the office is closed for a while, then bring it back in a bigger tank? You’ll need to refer to the whole care sheet (treat the water to dechlorinate it), add some live plants, etc etc.
Honestly, I wonder if whoever put it there even wants it. Maybe you could say, “Oh this fish, I love it so much! My son/daughter/XYZ/cousin has been saying how much they want one at our house…. We’re thinking of getting a fish tank for our living room, but we don’t know what kind of fish to put in it yet….” Hopefully they’ll get the hint and give it to you.
Your best bet would honestly be facebook marketplace, depending on where you are you’ll probably be able to find *heavily* discounted setups that work perfectly fine, ive found 40 litre tanks with filters and heaters for £15 before! Itd be hard to get any decorations in there without immobilising the fish with how small it is, otherwise id suggest adding plants to make him a lil more comfortable, if you cant get a second-hand tank for him, honestly just ensuring his water is changed and interacting through the glass would help a bunch, no doubt he’s struggling with some kind of toxin exposure
See if you can’t find a larger container/tank at a thrift. I can usually find anything from 2.5-20gal for under $15. You can probably find a filter, too. You can find a preset heater for under $10 on Amazon, and for substrate you can use washed pool sand or play sand. Cheap options for helping little buddy out 🙂 you can also forage your local waterways for plants if you don’t want to spend money, or check your local buy nothing group for cuttings. I used to give mine away locally.
I hate this social construct of job hierarchy. Your job is so important. Without a clean environment, the whole office would go downhill.
Thank you for caring about this little guy. Maybe you could print out a care sheet and place it next to the tank?
Honestly, create an alt google account and leave bad reviews about animal abuse. Might get taken down, might do the trick, because who wants to be known as a doctors office that condones animal abuse?
