BOG OF ETERNAL STENCH.
I set up this new 20g long. It started out with crystal clear water, I dechlorinated it with Prime, I rinsed all of the substrate, I used sand from my previous aquarium and the filter media from the previous aquarium for the beneficial bacteria.
Within about 6 hours the water turned milky white, I learned that that was the bacteria blooming to kill all the nitrites and ammonias and that I should just leave it alone.
This morning I went to turn the filter on after having it off for a few days, there was this disgusting goopey layer on the surface and as soon as it was broken by the flow, this god awful rotten egg smell came out of the water.
PLEASE help me get rid of this revolting stench. I’m aware that it’s either anaerobic sulfur bacteria that spawned because there wasn’t any water flow or it was whatever freaking sludge I had to scoop off the water.
I did a 50% water change, gravel vacuumed to get rid of anaerobic pockets, and got as much goop out as I could.
What else do I do?
Please this smell is wretched and I’m at a complete loss
