I posted on here almost a week ago, and I had a lot of feedback about my tank going through a bacterial bloom. I’m scared I’m not researching right or getting wrong feedback.

My water started to evaporate so I topped it off with distilled water, hoping I made the right decision, and not made the bacteria bloom worse. I’m so paranoid over how cloudy it is. I know it’s a hands off situation. I’m adding stability to the tank every night, as someone suggested for me to do. Now I’m unsure about this information as I have gotten bad feedback before.

I see a lot of people suggest a UV light, which I thought about getting just now. But before I spend the money should I wait it out another week.? And keep doing what I am doing? (if what I am doing is good)..

I’m sorry I’m new to fish keeping. I know there is not enough plants or hides. I have stuff coming in the mail and plan on buying over $50 worth of plants when I get paid tomorrow. I’m trying my best to give this dude the best life. The light does look bright in the picture but I promise you all that it’s not as bright in person. I’m using my plant that’s out of water to shade it.

  1. Blooms like that are normal for reasonably recently set up tanks like that one. Just feed carefully. Preferably hand feed him a few times to see how many pellets he actually eats without any hitting the bottom, or if any hit the bottom, make sure he hoovers them up quickly. And most likely, the bloom will fade away on its own. The pants also aren’t up taking nutrients like they will once their roots get established. For the time being, you could also throw in some Anubias just to soak nutrients, but not necessary.

What you’re doing is good. Don’t bother with a UV sterilizer yet.

Do invest in a good liquid test kit like the API master kit ASAP if you don’t already have one so that if anything does go wrong down the road, you will be able to do something about it (standard practice it to post a picture of the tubes and the color card here and folks will help you read them). Overall, looks like you’ve got quite a good hoem for the little fella.

Stop with the stability every night. Let nature do its thing. Just let it run and you will clear up in a few days

Edit: just realized that you have a lil buddy in there already – now understand why stability was recommended. This is a tough spot, and I might just keep doing what you’re doing. Sorry for the bad info above

  3. Pothos Pothos Pothos. One of those suckers in the back of your tank will clear most of this up. I run Pothos in all my tanks except 1 and my tanks are crystal clear. Nitrates are always perfect too.

Is this tank cycled? Don’t cycle with him in it. It’s more humane to put him in a separate container and do water changes every 2-3 days while that tank cycles.
