I got a new Tank (used one) and I set it up yesterday. There are only rocks, substrate and sand (and water). I am trying the Dark Start Method. Just to be sure, I checked the pH and other things on both my aquariums, one is fresh new and the other is already somewhere five to six months old with4 adult and around 20 baby fishes (Guppies), plants and wood.
To my surprise, both sticks showed exactly the same results! What is wrong?
Should I trust these testing sticks?
There is no way my running aquarium has the exact same values as the fresh new Tank…. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks

Consider getting a set of reputable liquid tests. The API Master Test Kit covers the basics and you can add on any additional tests for other parameters you are concerned about. You can use this to get measurements you can trust and validate the accuracy of your test strips. Test strip accuracy varies.

pH will tend to drift down in new tanks. This should also drive KH down a bit.

Water changes on a old tank though will reset to the same as a new tank.

Fairly possible you have the same water perimeters, yet the new tank is not cycled and will have a nitrite peak.

    Also get another test kit…
