I use matrix in all my other canister but decided to try these for half the price. Ive heard of people using them in their sumps. So I guess we will see how it goes.

know what type of plastic they are and how they interact with flowing whatever + spec’s.

im all for DIY / substitutions for things. but last thing you want is a slow burn crash or sudden fuck up.

Made the switch a couple years ago. All is good. Water parameters always what they need to be.

  3. I use these in my diy canister filters for my outdoor ponds. I get them from the dollar tree for $1.25 for a 7 pack. They are awesome, and don’t clog up easily. I haven’t had to open up either filter in over 6 months.

I just bought a big bag of pre-filter spongers and put them In my filter alongside carbon pellets and ceramic rings. Cheap and effective.

  5. You won’t notice a difference.they work as well as anything else but most tanks are way over filtered on the biological side. Most tanks don’t even need bio media because your gravel, tank walls , hardscape even inlet and outlet pipes are all covered in beneficial bacteria.if you have plants they will consume ammonia in preference to nitrate so the bb are probably not getting much in the filter anyway. But people see dirty water from dissolved organics or high nitrates and chuck ever more biomedia to fix it when they don’t do a thing for those issues anyway. All the bb do is convert ammonia to nitrate, nothing more.

  6. I use these in my canister. I have a course, medium and fine sponge before them to collect any junk. Flow is perfectly fine and there’s a ton of surface area for bacteria.
