I've been keeping fish for almost 4 years now, many different tanks, many different fish, but i apparently have the absolute worst luck with bettas. To keep it short, I've had give or take 15 bettas in the last 3.5 years, and only one them has lived more than a year. I don't have problems with any of the other types of fish that I keep. I've gotten bettas from many different sources and I have tried many different things, but no matter what, they all randomly get sick and die, despite treatment. Not looking for any advice, I'm a very seasoned fish keeper, just curious as to where everyone else has gotten their bettas and how long you've had them. I know bettas are massively bred and their genetics are 💩 these days, I'm just generally curious. I currently only have one betta now, and after he passes, I think i'm done keeping bettas. I love them, I do, but I cant keep going through the constant worries and heart break every time they get sick and die. I've gotten bettas from different locations of big box stores, locally owned aquarium stores, and even ordering online from breeders in other countries.

If you've also experienced similar, I'd love to hear your input.

Here's a picture of Mosby (named after Ted Mosby and the ridiculous red cowboy boots👢🤣) He had severe swim bladder when I found him at Petco and he bounced back soooo fast and has been doing amazing since! ❤️ I've had Mosby since April 2025. (Yes, I am aware of the fin rot, we're trying natural remedies before medication).

  1. Mom got her betta from a cousin of mine who’s been into animals his whole life. It was the last female from what I’m guessing was a brood (term?). She’s been here in this pitiful 3.5 gal since what I think is October, but that changes in a few weeks once the other fish have had their move-in periods done with.
