It’s a couple days after xmas and my family did a small party tonight and we just exchanged gifts, my aunt gave me a beta fish. she also didn’t provide a tank it’s just a reptile critter tote. i grew up with my brother raising beta fish so we have a filter still but the only tank i have is a 20 gallon top fin hexagon tank. I’m going out to get proper supplies tomorrow but im worried about what to do until then.
do i keep him in the cup? i don’t think that’s okay but i don’t have the materials to put him in the tank yet :(( is he gonna be okay??

Edit, to make that link look less sketchy: https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/wiki/fishincycle
It’s from the FAQs in the sidebar of this very sub.
You can setup the tank and put it in there. It’s not like the cup is a better environment than a tank, even if it’s not fully ready yet. Read up on the care sheet and wiki and how to monitor ammonia and nitrite levels during the fish-in cycle.
The tank does not look to be twenty gallons, but maybe that is the angle.
Betta fish need:
Heater
Filter
Live plants
A place to hide
Substrate
High quality food, make sure the first two ingredients are some kind of meat like fish, shrimp, bugs and not corn, wheat, or another filler grain mix. Bettas don’t need it.
5 gallon minimum tank. 10 gallons is better
Do not give them any friends. They don’t like them. They are not social animals.
I think the tank is better than the cup, just make sure to clean it real good before adding water and clean the substrate a couple times
