hello!!! this is my first post on reddit ever lol! but my sister had the dumb idea of getting a betta fish as a white elephant gift and i made sure that i was the one who kept it because i knew no one else in my family would take the fish seriously and give her the care she needs. i have been doing extensive research about betta’s and the right tank and everything she needs, but i still have a lot to learn and i want her to be as happy and healthy as possible. im out of town at the moment so she’s currently still in the tiny little cup she came in, but tomorrow as soon as i get home me and my gf are going to get her everything she needs and immediately transport her (safely ofc). if you guys have any advice or tips or things i should know, i would absolutely love to hear all of it!!! she’s so small and adorable and has the biggest eyes but also colorless since she’s a baby and in that small ass cup 🙁 ALSO!! i know the food is not the right food for bettas but it’s also my sister provided so she’s eating that for now but again, tomorrow i am getting her absolutely everything she needs!!!

Her stomach is tiny, about the size of her eye, so I’d take all that food out asap! She can eat too much and get bloated or the uneaten food can make her sick, too. It is better for her to eat less for a day or two than too much right now.

  2. Too much food. She is really small, so I would recommend very small food. Also she might not eat for a few days as she distressed and gets used to her new home. My juvenile female betta a bit bigger than yours eats mini pellets. If you need to feed her, use only 1 of those pellets, soak it in water first the when I gets soggy give it too her. Remember so can go a day without eating, its better her water stays clean over 1 meal.

Hey there!! Its much easier than you think ill try to keep it pretty simple.

    5-10 gallon tank

Substrate (i like fluval stratum or contrasoil), youll need approximately 1 lb of substrate per gallon

    Hardscape (wood, rocks) (nothing painted)

Plants – i recommend anubias variants. Anubias comes in many different sizes so you can find a variant that works for whatever look your going for. You just take the base of the plant and glue it to a piece of wood or a rock then throw it in the tank (no actual planting needed). There is a thick green part at the base of the plant called the rhizome, if you plant this under anything the plant will die.

For cycling your tank i would start with buying prime, flourish, and a small dropper. 2 drops of prime per new gallon of water (ex: if youre adding 10 gallons of water to a tank, you need to add 20 drops of prime. If youre doing a water change and only adding 3 new gallons of water, you do 6 drops of prime). For the flourish, i fill the bottom of the cap once every other week for my 10 gallon.

For food i like fluval bug bites (i use the color enhancing) and spirulina brine shrimp. I feed every other day and switch these out. Their stomach is only the size of their eye so base how much you feed off of that.

If youre need anymore advice or recommendations on products let me know im happy to help!! Im no expert this is just what has worked for me
