I have been fishing off the Santa Cruz CA jetty from the rocks casting towards the waves crashing in, I’m not sure if I’m too far out at this spot, or if my rig simply isn’t the right one, or if I’m jigging wrong, would appreciate any tips for up here in Santa Cruz shore fishing, thank you in advance!

  1. No, that rig is a mess. The gold Kastmaster spoon sinks, so you don’t need to use it on a rig with a sliding egg weight. the orange grub is also not needed as the Kastmaster has plenty of action on its own to attract fish… putting that grub on the hook like that will hurt the action of the spoon and will hinder getting a good hookset on a fish that bites.

Just tie that spoon to the end of your line (no other hardware needed), cast out, let it sink to your desired depth, and retrieve. Nothing else is needed to fish that spoon.

  2. Ditch the sinker with this rig, you want to tie that spoon directly to your line and just straight retrieve that. If you want to use a grub, buy some jig heads and feed it on to those, again straight retrieving. You’re only going to want to use a sinker if you are using live/cut bait to sit/drag on the bottom slowly.
