I took the first picture last night because my mom didn't believe me when I was talking about how he sleeps. And woke up today and he's suddenly missing a chunk of his tail. Should I add almond leaves to his tank? I can't figure out what he was caught on.

I would guess he bit that section off, it’s fairly common in the long finned variety of bettas. So sorry! Reduce any water currents, add more places to rest, but not a lot you can do against it. Just keep the water clean and he should be fine health wise if you keep any eye out for anything else.
