This is my first baitcaster, got it for Christmas. It’s an Abu Garcia MLF 7’ medium heavy. I put 30 pound braid with a 17 pound flouro carbon leader on it. I’m really good at casting it already, and I only birdsnest when I bomb a cast. Thoughts?

I have that exact rod and reel. I’ve fished with it about a year. It’s one of 6 that I keep in my rotation out of 20 or so rods and reels. I spooled mine with 12lb mono. I fish spinner baits and some top water baits on it. I also throw a rattle trap type bait. I like it pretty well and think it’s a good all around rig. I fish a lot of open water so the 12lb line works pretty good for me. The 30lb braid may be a little heavy for that rig. It may serve you well if you fish heavy cover
