so I was sold this guy as a “Bristlenose pleco” and I’m starting to doubt that (or getting paranoid maybe). I’ve had him since October and he’s gotten 4 inches (pic included) I know bns can get 4-5 inches it was just so fast I’m worried he’s a sailfin or god forbid a common. I really love him and would hate if he outgrew the tank cause I cannot afford the care for a large pleco (hence why I bought what I thought was a bn). he also has no bristles, but he could very well be a female for all I know

  1. Due to the tiger stripes on the face, looks like a common pleco to me.

Even bristlenose females have more of a spotted pattern and flatter body.

  2. It’s never hypostomus plecostomus, or common pleco. This is probably a sailfin pleco, or at least belonging to the genus Pterygoplichthys.

This is a sail fin pleco Pterygoplichtys gibbiceps, and it will grow to be around 20 inches

Def not a bristlenose. Some kind of common plec. So unfair that the shop is selling animals to people who might not be able to properly care for them when they grow. PS they like to live in water ;P
