Put this piece of wood i bought from fish pet store.
Water turned yellow.
Did 50% water change out of fear.
Google it and it said its ok for it to be yellow cause tanins?
I am scared of google and i love my fish glizzy.
Is this normal? Healthy? Acceptable?

I kinda vibe with the yellow asthetic , idm it being yellow, i just care if its safe.

Also any advice welcome

Tannins are good for your tank!! it’s nothing to be worried about. It can be used as a natural medicine for fin rot especially for bettas and such. If you don’t like the color just wait a few water changes and it’ll be all gone!

It’s safe! It’s just tannins, and if you have fish originally found in a tropical area like the Amazon, they like it. It won’t hurt other fish though.

Its 100% safe, it might even make the water healthier for the fish actually. Tanninis lowers ph, its especially good for bettas iirc. Some think it looks ugly, i personally am not looking to have a blackwater tank (thats what these kind of tanks are called) but ive seen some very pretty ones on this sub. You should google or just look in this sub for blackwater tanks if you like this look, could make for some good inspiration if you want to rescape in the future

Google is correct, it’s the wood slowly releasing tannins into the water. Harmless to your fish.

It’s a large piece you have so very unlikely “a few” water changes will be enough. My piece still leeches tannins 3 years later.

If you like the colour then great but if you want to remove it then use Purigen. It’s not advertised as removing tannins but is so good at it that it’s likely used more so for that function than it’s designed use.

It’s the tannins leaching from the wood. It’s natural and beneficial for the water, though can have a small lowering effect on the ph. The amount that will come out will reduce with time (think like a new vs an old tea bag). If you don’t like it, you can boil the wood on the stove a few times until less colour starts leaching out of it. Just make sure to let it cool back down before putting it back in your tank

  6. I do not believe English is your first language, so I’m trying to keep the words simple to read, or for software to translate for you:

The tannins cause yellow water, and this looks poor to our eyes at first. It is actually helpful to most animals that will live in your tank.

Just do regular water changes to return the water to being clear.

For the first few months it will turn yellow again in just a few days.

Then it will take a week.

Eventually it will take the better part of a month to turn the water yellow.

I have two large pieces of driftwood in a large 75G / 280L tank. After four years, it still turns yellow in 2-3 weeks.

You willl learn to like the natural look it causes the water to have: no pond or lake has crystal clear water. I often plan water changes for the day before I have friends over, because normal people are amazed by crystal clear water and thing brown water means the fish are suffering and it needs cleaned.
