I’ve had my tank for 3 months now, everything seemed to be stabilising over the past few weeks and my fish appeared to be thriving. I’ve been keeping on top of water changes etc and testing regularly, checking in with my local fish store who reassured me everything seemed okay. My fish suddenly got sick roughly a week ago, coming out with white specs all over them.

I visited my local fish store and told them what was wrong, they gave me some medication to tackle what they diagnosed as ‘white spot’.

I’ve since completed the 7 day course of dosing the medication every other day, and the white spot has not improved, if anything it has got worse. These pictures are as of now. I’ve since lost 4 fish, and the rest look visibly unwell.

Is there anything I am doing wrong or anything I can do to tackle this better going forwards? I fear I am about to lose more fish as the days pass.

You have the ich my guy and what you need to do is take the carbon out of your filter before you medicate and bump that temperature up to about 85 ish and some people may or may not agree with that method but it has never steered me wrong

Edit I pulled this straight from the internet it’s the first thing that pops up when you Google how to get rid of ich

To get rid of Ich (White Spot Disease), raise the aquarium temperature (to 80-84°F/27-29°C to speed up the parasite’s lifecycle), perform gravel vacuums with water changes, add aquarium salt (if safe for your fish), and use specific Ich medications like those with malachite green or copper, continuing treatment for 10-14 days even after spots vanish to kill all stages of the parasite. Always remove carbon filtration and read medication instructions carefully, especially for sensitive fish.

I used ich x and the tank cleared up in 3 days. No more ich. I did lose 6 red phantom tetras to the ich

  3. It’s itch. You need strong meds or risk them dying. Itch actually happens under the skin and what you’re seeing are basically pimples covering the body. When they pop, spores come out and the itch will then spread again. It’s super important to stay on this and make sure to vacuum the bottom after treatment etc.
