So I thought I had a male and female but I learned that males can have the black anal fin bar that females do. One has a very distinct black bar and the other does not. The one with the black bar is smaller but does not have a yellow belly or the streamline head and flares regularly at the larger male. I have another that is 100% a female but is younger than these 2 that I have already. They have cohabitated for like 5 months already so I’m assuming they would be aggressive if it was 2 males? I’m mostly worried about the female getting harassed by 2 males

An uneven set is a bad option anyway. They pair up when they are sexually mature so someone will be left out and bullied, often to death. You should see which ones pair up, they will do cute couples behaviors, then move the other one out.

I’ve had them for quite a while and been successfully breeding them. When I did my initial research I read that they prefer to pick a mate and stick with that one. That has been my experience so far. I initially bought two couples that paired up, then added two more young ones that I thought were a m/f pair but as they matured it turned out to be two males. Those two young males were killed off before I could move them sadly. I then got another pair later that were already coupled in the store so I have a total of 6, 3 breeding pairs and they all happily coexist. I’ve raised several batches of eggs from them and they always pair with their chosen mate.
