Hey!

I got some snails that came with my plants and now it seems they have found love.
Happy for then and all that but I would like to know if I should leave them be or do something about it to avoid that they take over my tank.
Here is a pic of them getting it on.
Are they the kind to over populate or not?

Thank you in advance for your help!

You can let them be. I am quite found of my ramshorns and the only way to control the population with the quantity of food you put into the tank.

  2. I personally love my ramshorn. They won’t overpopulate so long as you do not overfeed. I breed them to feed off to my pufferfish, fishless cycles, and feeding green water cultures. They are also excellent tank cleaners and fun to watch.

If you need them gone, you can toss in a piece of zucchini. They will swarm to it, and you can pull it out with them attached. If you see a clear, flat, blob, with little clear circles in it, these are eggs. Remove these if you see them.

  3. It really depends on how much it bothers you. They won’t harm the aquarium and will help with algae, left over food, and some detritus.

The snails will eventually start dying out if there isn’t any food to keep them alive so with time the population will balance itself out. When the snail populations explode they can be an indicator of overfeeding or something else being out of balance in the aquarium. Like a canary in a coal mine.

When they get excessive I put a bowl down with some pellets in it. The snails take a little while to catch on but when they do you will have a bowl full of snails. I put them on my veggie patch.

I personally keep a loach. I have a few that are easy to big for him so he leaves them alone but if I do get an explosion he helps control the population
