Hi everybody! On sunday im hopefully going to be getting a gold fish and id like to know if these items are appropriate, ive done some research but my mum and dad arent really helping and said its my responsibility so id like to double check. Ive read that fake plants arent good for fish but my dad says that only matters if they’re exotic, and im getting a cold water one.

  1. Too small for a goldfish. -they beed kuch larger tanks. Sure you can stunt their growth but that would be cruel and drastically shorten their lifespan or reduce their quality of life.

That’s a lot of decor for that size tank. It will look a total mess crammed in there like some plastic omelette.

Your dad is wrong.  Plants do better at the kind of temps this tank will be sat at like i dont heat 4 out of 6 of my tanks and the plants grow perfectly well. They sit between 17° and 21°.

    Downvote all you want.

  2. You should read up on cycling a new fish tank before getting fish. Is there a filter system? Goldfish in particular produce a ton of waste and filtration is paramount for keeping one. The fake plants and decor are all fine.

yeah, your dad is totally wrong. that is waaaaay too small for a goldfish, those guys get huge. consider a smaller fish, maybe a betta! and live plants are definitely the way to go, they’ll keep your water clean and won’t tear up any fish fins.

Not big enough for a goldfish unfortunately. Before getting any fish just set up the tank and research the nitrogen cycle in aquariums. That is the best advice anyone can offer you right now.

  5. That’s a 14 gallon tank. Google “goldfish tank requirements” and every single source will tell you that’s nowhere near enough.

If it has to be cold water like your other reply said, get some White Cloud Mountain Minnows. They’ll be good for your set up.

Goldfish get too big, and in a small tank will get stunted but die from their insides growing. Goldfish also like sand.

  7. Get another fish tank stand. That one looks like an Ikea and they’re not built to support the kind of weight that tank will carry, nor the water eventually spilling onto it.

It’s made of cheap compressed wood.

  8. So thats about 14-15 gallons.. so it wouldn’t be good for a goldfish, however like others have said, you could totally do a betta! If you want more than one fish, you could also make it a small community tank for tetras and have some corys too.

Live plants are always better than plastic, and there are quite a few hardy plants thatll work if youre just starting out.

Anubias, java moss, and Java fern are some.

hey op! i would highly recommend some small schooling fish instead—maybe guppies or tetras? when i got my first tank, i had a 12 gallon of about 8 male guppies and 2 mystery snails and they were wonderful to have! very interactive, bright colors, everyone loved them 🙂 but, you need to do research first! depending on the fish, they are happiest in different temperatures, pH levels, etc. happy fish = longer lives!

**just a tip for you since you’re starting out: PLEASE research the visual differences between male and female fish. some (guppies, platys, swordtails, mollies etc) give birth to live young, and you don’t want a ton of babies due to livebearing fish. males have a gonopodium, females do not

Too small for goldfish but u could get some platy’s and cloud minnows. Also if you get gold/orange platy’s they’ll look similar enough to gold fish lol

Heya, looks like the same size tank as mine, I have tetras and guppies (tropical). See if you can add an air stone to the tank, helps with the oxygen levels (and looks pretty cool too). Live plants are always best. I recommend the aquatics to your door website, they have some good info and fish/plants are decent prices too.

There are nice fish that stay small. You can get a few and they will enjoy having room to move around. Don’t mix species without advice since some are aggressive towards other species (and sometimes their own species).

A single gold fish will get lonely and won’t do well in a small tank. Goldfish are also messy and it can be a lot of work to keep the tank clean.

Fish love live plants. Anubias grow easily and don’t need anything special to stay healthy. You could add one or two to this setup. Live plants also help keep the water cleaner and add oxygen to the water.

  13. Why not get a heater? They are $20 and at this size use the power of a light bulb. Then you can get small typical aquarium fish.

  14. You shouldn’t put a fish in before cycling.

That’s wayyyyy too small for a goldfish

Try doing more research about cycling your tank and look around the sub to see what other people do and know. But please do not get a fish on Sunday. It will die.
