I’ve been thinking corydoras but I’ve never owned them before, plus I think they need to be in groups of at least 6 so I think that would create some overstocking since it’s only a 20 gal.
Or neon tetras but I heard those guys are pretty hard to keep alive:/
Any suggestions and advice is appreciated:)
(Also ignore the reflection of my croc on the glass pls)

Try some Cory’s
I think khuli loaches would be really cute with the sand! They’re also a schooling critter so it has the same issue as corys :/ pygmy corys might be a good paring if they have some extra hides to get away from the betta/ light tho! Adorable tank and a very handsome boy :3
Any possible tankmate that’s small enough for a 20g and safe to be housed with a betta will need appropriate school sizes of 6-8 fish. Not sure why 6 corydoras would be overstocking though? If you find them too big, I second the pygmy corydora suggestion. Can get like 10 of them in a 20g. 🙂
Though personally id first add a lot more plants to the tank. It’s quite empty.
6 albino Pygmy Corys and 6-8 neons would be fine. I have a 20 and I have 6 albino Pygmy’s, 6 neons, 6 male guppies and a female betta. Looks like yours is a male so maybe more Cories and neons and no guppies. Just provide more hiding places for the neons. Even if you need to add silk plants.
20 gallons is plenty for a betta and corys, skip the tetras are they are fin nippers.chili rasboras would be nice too.
chili rasboras, ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, all good options. There are a lot of different small rasboras that go great with bettas
Mini snowball pleco. L471
Mine houses very well with sparkling gourami
You can fit 6 corydoras (probably even more), but you might need a more plants as I hear they like to hide. Species like Pygmy and Salt and Pepper Corydoras are perfect for a 20 gallon.
For the top swimmers you can get a variety of fish, I have 10 harlequin rasboras (I might get 2 more) for example. Other schooling fish like Cardinal tetras (they look very similar to neons) black neon tetras, neon green rasboras, chili rasboras, etc.
Y’all silly. Stir it up and change water.
I agree with the Cory’s. I love my Pygmies. If you can get those, they will use the whole water column not just the bottom so your tank would be fine (while with some types of Cory’s it’s better to have a long tank). And I’ve seen so many fish try and bully my Cory’s (not the Pygmies, I’ve had them in their own tank with just shrimp and snails, but my other Cory’s). Some fish have tried to bully my bronze, panda, Sterbai, and false julii… but the Cory’s couldn’t care less.
Blueberry snails would look really cool next to him! Or maybe some shrimpies
Also he’s gorgeous I’m obsessed with his coloring!
I have had bettas with neon tetras and corydoras. I have also had a betta that was VERY aggressive and you couldn’t even look at him. He would flare up when he would see me and if I put a finger in his tank, he would attack my finger. I loved him so much. But yeah, he was a no tank mate type of fish.
If you are adding tankmates, have a plan just in case you do have to take your betta out for being aggressive. Like a smaller temporary holding tank JUST IN CASE.
Pygmy Corys are great, neon tetras will die for no reason and are more bite sized so your Betta might try to eat them.
I have regular Corys with my Bettas, my guys are chill with them but my girl Betta attacks them so she gets no tank mates now. Just be careful and have a backup plan in case your Betta also doesn’t get along with them.
I suggest getting more plants and hiding places if you’re gonna get him any kind of tank mates tho.
Harlequin rasporas are peaceful and not fin nippers. Corydora are also peaceful with a betta. However, you should be aware that introducing tank mates *TO* a betta tank will make your betta territorial over their space. The best way is to add a betta to an established, peaceful fished tank first so they don’t try to take out whomever broke into their home.
