It looks like his face is going to fall off, and then he just goes back to normal???

I’m sure you know this but Betta fish flare and males have beards that come out from under their gills, idk why but yours looks lopsided maybe someone else has more expertise on that part
That’s his beard and he is showing you what a tough guy he is. Totally normal to have different shapes and colors.
It looks scary cuz it’s trying to be scary. Their face puffs up and the beard (the black thing under their gill) is often visible. Bettas often do this when they’re angry, often triggered by reflection and protecting territory.
I’m not sure why the beard looks like that though.
