Hey guys! Could anyone please advise? I did a 30% water change last night for my Betta that I rescued from really poor conditions a few weeks ago. He was absolutely fine yesterday, eating and swimming around. I came home tonight and found him in his floating hammock with clamped fins. At first I tried to prompt him to come out, which he did for a few seconds and then swam back in. Upon taking a closer look, his fins are very clamped and it seems like one gill is moving more than the other? My water parameters are:

Ammonia 0

PH 7.6

Carbonate Hardness 10

General Hardness 7

Nitrate 10

Nitrite 0

Water temp at 25 degrees

He’s in a 29 litre tank

Did you dechlorinate the water when you did the water change (if your water has chlorine)?

Do you scrub yourself and equipment up like a doctor before going in the tank ?

  3. If there’s something in the water that’s bothering him, try another water change. Test the water before you add it.

I also just wanted to add – I have two shrimp in the tank with him and they are both fine, so I’m very confused. Wouldn’t they also be acting different?

I printed that same hammock yesterday and noticed that my fish could stick an entire fin through some of the holes. Removed immediately

Mine eat a piece of the same toy and got bloated. But all went well and the next day he was fine

Its a him thing if the shrimp are fine your waters probs ok they would go first if it was water not to say something didnt enter the tank. But do you know an age ive seen a few just start getting lazy sitting resting more. If you can pop a uv in for a day see if he becomes more active a cheaper one will do what you need. If he had parasites i suspect youd see a flash or something here and there and judging by your water change system you likely to have not caused anything. The uv if its contaminant or bacterial build up that we cant see youll know fairly quick he start becoming more him even after a few hours if hes older bacterial build ups for what ever reason do seem to hit bettas as they get older they have good and bad days were you think hes good today few days later bit of a rubbish day.

A salt bath in a secondary tank might help, is he still eating food? Because you saved him from a poor situation it could’ve had an effect on his long term health and made him weaker and more prone to infection, just my two cents.

Bettas NEED at least 75 degree tanks since they are tropical fish. That is most definitely what’s wrong.
