I got four free tanks from the 80s and the silicone is kind of rotted (none leaked). I've been playing with my first one, scraping out silicone and trying to scrub. I purchased 100% silicone to re caulk/seal it, but I'm worried that maybe I should have done all my scrubbing/cleaning before scraping the silicone off?

Not really sure what I'm looking for…advice, suggestions about methods of scraping or maybe a good resource for the whole thing? Has anybody ever done this and the tank failed? Just planning on taking my time and having fun with it! Thanks!

  1. If you are rebuilding them for your own use, you have some leeway. If you hope to sell them, then its not likely worth the effort unless they are in great shape. Beyond the condition of the seals, check for scratches on the glass and the condition of the rims. Also, after you scrape the corner seals, check the quality and condition of the silicone holding the panels together… that can degrade as well.

I bought a used 45g pentagon tank and stripped it down completely to individual panes of glass and then cleaned them up with a razor blade and cleaning agents. Once all clean I reassembled the panels and resealed the seams. Its a learning experience, but a lot of work. I’d only do it again if I found a ‘new-ish’ tank in perfect condition that just needed a reseal.
