The quest to catch the smallest fish possible on a rod has led me to Tenkara.

RDP has some relatively inexpensive 0wt rods. I built one from their blank that’s a lot of fun for chasing shiners and darters. It’s a fun panfish rod too. Shiners in particular feed surprisingly aggressively on tiny dries.
Check out Tenkara Bum’s blog posts on micro fishing if you haven’t already. Some of the equipment he talks about, especially the stuff imported from Japan, has been hard to find since COVID, but it’s still a good resource.
I’ve caught tiny fish, some as small as 1″ or so, on flies down to size 32. Unfortunately I’m just about out of 277s and haven’t been able to find more, but size 28 flies are okay for all but the smallest of fish.
Something to watch out for with micro fishing is tippet size. Most 9x and 10x tippet isn’t actually smaller than 8x. Trouthunter 10x is .0029″ and 9x is a little over .003″, while Rio 8x is .003″.
