You absolutely have to separate. Imbellis are risky to cohab even in m/f pairs. My guess is he was stress striping to avoid fighting but now he’s snapped.

I’m not an expert on fish sexing but I don’t think that fin length has anything to do with gender. female bettas tend to have shorter fins i believe but they also have egg spots by their stomachs. im sure you can find a reference photo on google or the sub if you need to verify if both your bettas have this.
bettas also do change coloration when they are happy and age but I dont know that they change sex. It is more likely that it has changed coloration and is the same sex.

Bettas, like many fish, can shift gender under certain circumstances. Now you really need to separate them – I know, it’s more than you asked for!
